‘Women need to be equipped with modern skills’

With women amounting to 58% of the voting public, the power to turn the tables already lies in their hands, said Dr. Sulochana Segera, Founder and Chairperson of Women in Management, Sri Lanka.

She made these observations at the 2nd International Conference on Future of Women 2019, held in Colombo recently.

The event was organized by the International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM). Expressing her views on women and politics, she cited two main reasons on why women do not enter politics: cultural hindrances and lack of finances. Dr. Segera reiterated that ‘power’ to change the world already lies within her; however, the women are yet to realise this fact. “Woman is power; she doesn’t know it yet,” she stressed.Speaking on the topic “Women in Power”, she reiterated the need to change the attitudes of women, especially mothers in order to change the attitudes of men. She considered mothers to be the roots of society. Also, she emphasised the need for women to create woman successors to take up leadership. Dr. Segera also highlighted the need to create female role models in all socio- economic spheres.

“The man with the right mind-set will never be scared of an empowered woman,” she noted.

However, she urged women to speak for themselves and others than waiting for others to speak on their behalf. Highlighting issues related to women and economic empowerment she lamented that Sri Lanka is yet to calculate the contribution of the women in the informal sector to the economic growth. Karthik Ekambaram Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion Consulting - AVTAR Group, India also addressing the gathering at the event under the theme , “Invisible Role of Women in Economic Development”, highlighted about the gender chore gap noting that women work 3-4 times more than men when it comes to domestic functions. Stressing the need to provide career enablers for women in the corporate sector as the sector itself is designed to match the needs of men, he said it is also important to urge women to take part in the formal sector and leadership positions and equip women with modern skills to face the demands of the changing world.
