Lanka Salt Limited will invest heavily to convert some of their properties and unused land running into over 500 acres as venues for future international and domestic tourism activities.
Chairman of the Lanka Salt Limited (LSL), Nishantha Sandabarana, said that they already have one of the most modern and large tree houses in Sri Lanka and circuit bungalows in Hambantota. The tree house has two rooms, two toilets, dining area and an upper deck with a view of the saltern and lagoon. There is also a three room circuit bungalow within walking distance to this and we will also refurbish this to offer better facilities. This bungalow already has two a/c rooms, hot and cold water, a large dining and sitting room facing the salt distribution area and a permanent cook.
“We have started to build a ground floor restaurant and this will be completed in two months to add value to both these properties.”

The other circuit bungalow in Hambantota which also has three ac rooms too will be given a facelift. “This tree house was already offered for local tourists in the pre COVID era; now we will sell it internationally through travel agents along with the circuit bungalows.”
“One of the biggest issues faced by local tourists when booking government circuit bungalows is that they have to visit our premises and in a bid to overcome this issue we will also open a web page and accept online bookings.”
The Hambantota Saltern also attracts seasonal migrant birds and a special area for bird watching too will be set up. Spelling out broader plans, the Chairman said that they plan to introduce ‘luxury tent’ accommodation in the vicinity of the Palatupana saltern located close to the Yala National Park. “For this I am allocating 50 acres and invite the private sector to join us to launch this as a PPP venture.”
Media Coordinator of Lanka Salt, Bandula Punchihewa said that the Chairman also has plans to upgrade the Salt Museum and introduce more digital features to it and also entertain guided tourists from the public to visit the Saltern when the pandemic settles.
