Tea Exports for the month of September 2020 totalled 24.1 M/kgs recording a deficit of 1.5 M/kgs vis-à-vis 25.6 M/kgs of September 2019.
Tea in bags, Tea in packets together with Bulk tea exports during September 2020 has shown a decrease vis-à-vis the corresponding month of 2019. Total revenue, however, of Rs. 21.09 B realized during September 2020 has shown a growth of 0.9 B vis-à-vis 20.1 B of September 2019.
Consequently, the FOB value of Rs. 873.27 (USD 4.76) has shown a gain of Rs. 88.87 vis-à-vis Rs. 784.40 (USD 4.35) of September 2019.
January-September 2020 cumulative exports of 198.2 M/kgs, records a decrease of 22.8 M/kgs vis-à-vis 221.09 M/kgs of January-September 2019. All main categories of exports (i.e Tea Bags, Packeted tea and Bulk tea) have shown a decrease YOY. Total revenue for the period January-September 2020 of Rs. 170.5 B shows a fairly significant decrease of Rs. 12 B vis-à-vis Rs. 182.5 B of January-September 2019.
Turkey has emerged as the No.1 importer of Sri Lankan tea followed by Iraq and Russia. Iran, China, Azerbaijan and Chile, in particular, are some of the other noteworthy importers of Sri Lankan tea. Meanwhile, exports to Saudi Arabia and Ukraine have shown growth during the period under review. Exports to Libya, Syria and UAE, however, have shown a decrease compared to the corresponding period of 2019.
