National poverty threshold crosses Rs 5,000

The National Poverty Line as measured by the Department of Census and Statistics for May crossed the Rs 5,000 threshold. The figures were released on June 15 . The district with the highest poverty line was Colombo with a threshold of Rs 5,434. The district with the lowest poverty line was Monaragala with a threshold of Rs 4,713. The Department of Census and Statistics notes that the reason for the increase of the official poverty line is the High Colombo Consumer Price Index value reported for the month of May 2020.

The National Threshold in the base year of 2013 was Rs 3,730. The Department of Census and Statistics states the district poverty line can be interpreted to be the minimum expenditure per person per month needed to fulfill basic needs.
