Some of the new star class hotels opening in Colombo are acting very irresponsibly when it comes to staff recruitment, said veteran hotelier and founder and Managing Director, Fenghuang Lou Restaurant, Jawatta Road, Colombo 05, M.R. Hassan.
He said that this is very evident in the Food and Beverage sector as the newly opened hotels simply offer the staff of smaller hotels additional incentives and grab them. “This has put small-time restaurant owners like us in a major dilemma.”
He said that unlike multinational hotels, they are unable to offer those kinds of incentives to their staff. "The irony of this is that we train new staff and as the staff become experienced they are being ‘grabbed’ by star class hotels."
He however said that hotel chains like Jetwing and Shangri La train their own staff and have the HR sector ready when a new hotel is being opened.
He also said that some of the young staff work for the hotel for a year, save money and then move out and become three-wheeler drivers.
He said the solution for this issue is to have more quality tourism training schools as the demand for tourism sector employees keeps increasing.
He said that Fenghuang Lou Restaurant employs a Chinese chef and has plans to open a second restaurant in Hambantota by the end of the year. “We hope to train our own staff for this project.”
