The National Savings Bank will provide users of their remittance services the opportunity to win prizes. The scheme under the stewardship of Chairman Keasila Jayawardana looks to promote the new partnership with Western Union.

The scheme was unveiled on October 19 at NSB Savings House (Head Office) with the first transactions through Western Union. Jayawardana expressed concern as to why it had taken so long for the State bank to partner with Western Union and it was one of her initial reforms at the institution.

Jayawardana noted that it was the President’s vision to help the worker. The Central Bank had previously in March 2019 discouraged banks from providing customers with additional benefits for their deposits.

Jayawardana called on the public to take advantage of the 8.5% interest rate loans for housing and business purposes offered by the bank. She said that students could obtain financial credit at a rate of 9.5% with the bank.

Jayawardana noted that Sri Lanka’s highest foreign exchange earnings come from workers abroad. She noted that customers in Italy, Korea, and the Middle East would benefit with the 100% state guarantee that is only available at NSB.

GM/CEO NSB Ajith Pieris noted that the bank had been in the remittance business for 15 years and the new partnership would help increase the quality of the offering. Western Union operates in more than 200 countries and handles multiple currencies.

Pieris noted the famous Albert Uncle advertisements from the 1990s and called on NSB officials to recognise both the global and local brand recognition of the Western Union service.

Pieris noted that Sri Lankans making remittances from overseas had a tendency to be involved in back-breaking professions like ice water fishing in Korea and that he was happy the bank could be of some relief to these people.
