There are over 600European tourists in Kalutara, Bentota and Beruwela star class Hotels and they are keen to get back to their native countries.
President Bentota and Kalutara Hotels Association, Rohan Gamage said that these tourists are offered special discounted rates but are offered the same high standard of service.
The hotels also don’t have an issue with supplies but a few hotels are running short of liquor.
“We are also constantly working with local health authorities to check and take precautions on Coronavirus regulations.”
He emphasized that none of the tourists or staff had tested positive for Coronavirus.
Gamage, who is also the General Manager of The Palms Beruwela said that the tourism industry is bracing for bad times in the next two three months. “The Service charge collected form Guests which is more than Staff’s salary will soon disappear and this would be a major issue for staffers.”
He said that some of the hotels may temporarily shut down in April for two months due to the ‘present guests leaving’ and ‘no new tourists’ checking in. The managements will also decide to retrench staff.
He said that the government must soon offer the moratoria that were promised in a bid to bailout the industry. “We have taken ‘two quick hits’, the Ester Sunday Blasts and now the Corona and we find it difficult to survive without government financial assistance.”
