Turkey, largest importer of Lankan tea

 Turkey has emerged as the largest importer of Sri Lankan tea in 2019 followed by Iraq and Russia with Iran occupying the 4th position. Other noteworthy importers are Libya, China, Azerbaijan, Syria and the UAE. Meanwhile, destinations such as USA, Saudi Arabia, India and Germany have shown a growth in imports in 2019 compared to the corresponding period of 2018.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka tea exports for the period January-December 2019 totalled 292.6 M/kgs vis-à-vis 282.3 M/kgs of January-December 2018, showing a gain of 10.3 M/kgs. When analysing the exports category-wise, Bulk tea totalling 122.8 M/kgs during January-December 2019 has shown a marginal growth of 0.4 M/kgs vis-à-vis 122.4 of January-December 2018.

Meanwhile, peacketed tea for January-December 2019 of 139.08 M/kgs has shown a growth of 7.8 M/kgs vis-à-vis 131.25 M/kgs of January-December 2018, whilst tea bags totalling 22.9 M/kgs for January-December 2019 have shown a growth of 1.4 M/kgs vis-à-vis 21.5 M/kgs of January-December 2018, according to Forbes and Walker tea Brokers tea market report.

Similarly, Instant tea totalling 3.07 M/kgs has shown a growth of 0.59 M/kgs vis-à-vis 2.4 M/kgs when compared to the corresponding period of 2018. Green tea too for the period January-December 2019 totalling 4.7 M/kgs has shown a marginal growth of 0.1 M/kgs vis-à-vis 4.6 M/kgs of January-December 2018.

Meanwhile, revenue of Rs. 240.6 billion realised from tea exports for January-December 2019 is the highest ever surpassing the previous best of Rs. 233.3 B realised in 2017.

Further, this also shows a growth of Rs. 8.9 billion when compared to Rs. 231.7 billion of the corresponding period of 2018.

Revenue from bulk tea however of Rs. 87.5 billion shows a deficit of Rs. 2.2 billion vis-à-vis Rs. 89.7 billion of January-December 2018. Meanwhile, Packeted tea totaling Rs. 105.3 billion shows a growth of Rs. 4.8 billion vis-à-vis Rs. 100.5 billion of January-December 2018.

Tea bags too, totaling Rs. 34.08 billion shows a growth of Rs. 4.05 billion vis-à-vis Rs. 30.03 billion of the corresponding period of 2018.
