India invests USD 560 mn for Jaffna development

The Kankasanthurei Harbour development assisted by the Indian government is moving at a rapid pace said Consul General, Consulate General of India, Jaffna, S. Balachandran at the opening of the 11th edition of the Jaffna International Trade Fair (JITF) at the Muttraveli grounds in Jaffna on Friday.

The Palali International Development Program is in progress while the development of the Kankasanthurai Harbour with Indian government assistance would add value to Jaffna as a destination for investment.

He said that in addition an MoU was also signed by the Indian government to promote ICT sector in Jaffna. “This will also allow Indian youth to be linked up with the Bangalore ICT sector and provide call centre services.”

This MoU will also boost up ICT education in the North.He also said that the Indian government has offered grants to the tune of around USD 3.5 billion so far and out of which USD 560 million has gone towards the development of the North. “Most of this has gone for education.”

He said the multi functional cultural centre build by the Indian assistance is also completed and would be opened soon.

JITF, the biggest and one of a kind event in the Northern Province and this too has helped towards the development of the Northern business sector.

Charles said that due to the conflict, the Northern region lost not only lives, but property and businesses and they were pushed back almost 40 years. There is lot of catching up to do.

“Now the time is ripe to catch up with the rest of the regions,” she said. Governor of the Northern Province, P.S.M. Charles was the Chief Guest at the opening while Mayor of Jaffna, Emmanuel Arnold and other invites participated.

The event was organised by Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services (Pvt) Ltd in association with the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Yalpanam with the support of the Jaffna Municipal Council, International Business Council, Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the Consulate General of India in Jaffna.
