SLIIT hosted the 13th Annual International Conference on Computer Science and Education (ICCSE) 2018 with the technical support rendered by the Sri Lankan arm of the world’s largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology, IEEE.
The conference which was held at the Cinnamon Lakeside from August 8-11 was organized by the executive committee of ICCSE 2018 and China Research Council of Computer Education in Colleges and Universities (CRC-CE).
The main theme of ICCSE 2018 ‘AI Empowering the Future Education,’ included topics centered on Data Science, Computer Science as well as their practices in education and e-society areas.
The chief guest was Minister of Science and Technology, Research, Skills Development and Vocational Training Dr. Sarath Amunugama.
The conference was chaired by Professor Lalith Gamage, Vice-Chancellor/Chief Executive Officer, SLIIT and the Local Organizing Chair was Professor Samantha Thelijjagoda, Dean, Faculty of Business, SLIIT.
Addressing the participants, Minister pledged the support of his ministry towards the conference, which serves as a foundation for a wider enhancement in technology which is a potent topic in all spheres of education.
Prof. Lalith Gamage, Vice Chancellor of SLIIT, in his welcome speech appreciated the efforts of the organizing committee for its pivotal role in ensuring the conference comes into fruition with a wealth of knowledge being shared by the erudite scholars who are committed to promulgating one goal; breakthrough methodologies in the field of Computer Science.
On behalf of CRC-CE, Prof. Maoqing Li, in his welcome speech mentioned the pride his organization felt in being part of an innovative programme which has gained massive strides and serves to create international bonds in education and Computer Science.

This event brought together a distinguished gathering of imminent professors, experts, professionals and researchers from universities, research institutes and related industries to share new research results, ideas and new perspectives on a wide range of topics related to Computer Science-AI, education, data Science and Engineering.
Also, it served as a platform to address frontier technical and business issues essential to applications of data Science in both higher education and advancing people’s life.
The technical programme which consisted of three keynote speeches was rich and varied in substance as Prof. Clarence W. de Silva, P. Eng., Fellow ASME, Fellow IEEE and Fellow Canadian Academy of Engineering, Fellow Royal Society of Canada Academic Qualifications addressed the topic of ‘New Trends in Machine Health Monitoring’; ‘An Inclusive Learning Algorithm Framework Towards Achieving “Less Artificial” Intelligence’ by Prof. Saman K. Halgamuge, Fellow of IEEE, The University of Melbourne, Australia and ‘Decomposition Based Multi-objective Evolutionary Computation’ by Prof. Qingfu Zhang, Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong. Additionally, the programme comprised of five invited sessions, two best paper sessions, five oral sessions and poster sessions which included the presentation of 173 technical papers.
The proceedings of ICCSE 2018 (Indexed by EI and ISTP) is published by IEEE and included in the IEEE Explore digital library.
