Permanently working from home has ill effects - Microsoft CEO

COVID-19 has brought the world to a standstill and has completely restricted the movement of people outside their homes. Malls, markets, school, colleges and offices- all have been shut down for an indefinite period. Employees of various companies and organizations are working from home and according to many of them, it is better than working in an office space.

Many prominent companies all across the globe have extended the work from home policy till the end of 2020. Even though working from home is preferred by many of us, it has many ill effects. As per Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, prolonged work from home could have serious consequences for social interaction and mental health for workers as digital video calls cannot replace in-person meetings, which have a more personal and humane touch to it.

Expressing his views on work from home policy and how it not an evergreen practice, Nadella mentioned, “What I miss is when you walk into a physical meeting, you are talking to the person that is next to you, you’re able to connect with them for the two minutes before and after.”

Recently, Twitter offered its employees to work from home “forever”, even after the global pandemic ends. Nadella expressed his views on the same soon after the announcement was made and he was quoted as saying: “What does burnout look like? What does mental health look like? What does that connectivity and the community building look like? One of the things I feel is, hey, maybe we are burning some of the social capital we built up in this phase where we are all working remote. What’s the measure for that?”

A few disadvantages of work from home include difficulty with work and home life separation, decreased social life, difficulty with motivation, lack of teamwork, etc.

It is difficult to leave work outside home while working from home. It also decreases social life of an individual as he/she is restricted inside the four walls of the home.

Also, a team of individuals working in an office setup results in an improved teamwork which automatically gives better results.
