Sri Lanka’s largest weft knitted fabric manufacturer Ocean Lanka has recently received the honor of achieving the status of system partnership with Bluesign.

Bluesign is a Swiss holistic system that provides solutions in sustainable processing and manufacturing to industries and brands. Ocean Lanka stands out as the first-ever manufacturer within the textile and the apparel industry of Sri Lanka to come into system partnership with Bluesign.

The agreement was signed using ink that does not harm the environment.

The Bluesign system, based on input stream management, ensures that approved chemical products and raw materials are used in all steps of the manufacturing process. On-site inspections verify the proper application of chemical products and raw materials in controlled processes and

ensure the responsible use of resources to guarantee the highest level of consumer safety.

Managing Director Ocean Lanka, Austin Au said, “We want our stakeholders to be confident in the implementing of a sustainable operation. By adopting the globally recognized BlueSign standards we have increased our ability to increase the positive impact on the environment. This is while serving the needs of customers who are being more acutely aware of the environmental crisis.”

Director Sales Asia Bluesign, Walter Streitler said, “This is a milestone for the textile industry in Sri Lanka. Ocean Lanka understood the BlueSign system and what it stands for. It stands for sustainability in production.”

He added “I am delighted because Ocean Lanka will adopt and implement BlueSign system and will this lead to sustainability.”

“This morning I had to amend my speech. There is another point that makes me happy. In today’s paper, the newly elected President in his inauguration speech pledged to the protection of the environment. That is what we can support for the future.”

“We talk about the environment and wastewater. We need to make sure the wastewater is not polluting the sea and rivers. We talk about air quality. We want to reduce CO2 and make sure the emission is safe. We talk about the soil and we make sure it is not poisoned.”

Ocean Lanka representative, Chathumada Liyanage said “There is a zero discharge of hazardous chemicals. We as a BlueSign system partner implement a holistic system. Our collaborative effort ensures zero discharge of hazardous chemicals at all pathways.”
