‘SL should fall in line with climate financing mechanisms’

There is tremendous global focus on climate financing mechanisms for sustainable future and Sri Lanka too, said German Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Jorn Rohde.

The world has realized the importance of sustainability and over the years governments are spending huge amounts for this and also taking several meaningful steps to safeguard the environment. He said that Germany has decided to do away with nuclear energy in two years time and also to move out of Coal Power generation in 15 years. “This is a very expensive decision but it has to be done to help greening the environment, but it has to be done to help greening the environment,” Ambassador Rohde said.

Rohde said that in Sri Lanka too there is a good focus and shift towards climate finance and this should intensify. He also said that the Ministry of Power and Energy has forwarded the Germany embassy a proposal to respond to a new coal power plant tender.

“I do not think this should be the right way forward.” Secretary ICC, Shanil Fernando requested the new administration and banks to consider providing 5% of their lending for green financing at a lower interest rate similar to what is offered to the agricultural sector.
